Council Appoints Director for EECMY-YDCS

Rev TayeRev TayeThe Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY) Council at its fifth meeting  held at Mekane Yesus Seminary Hall in Addis Ababa, has appointed Rev. Taye Abdissa as a Director of the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus -Yemisrach Dimts Communication Services (EECMY-YDCS) for a period of four years.

Rev. Tay assumed office on August 10, 2009.

Rev. Taye Abdissa replaces Ato Shibru Galla who served EECMY-YDCS for the last 17 years. Ato Shibru Galla however, stays with EECMY-YDCS as an advisor up to October 31, 2009.

Rev. Taye has long years of services at the EECMY with various capacities. He was pastor superintendent of Leqa Sutichi parish of the western synod of the EECMY for two years. From 1978 to 1979 he taught at Western Synod High School. He was Youth Section Secretary at the EECMY Central Office for two years (1983-1984). He also did serve as a head of Audio Visual Section for 15 years (1985-1999). From 2000 up until he was appointed as a Director of the EECMY-YDCS, he has been the Head of the Electronic Media Division of the EECMY-YDCS.

Rev. Taye is a Theologian Communicator, who holds Bachelor degree in Theology from Mekane Yesus Seminary in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and Masters Degree in Mass Communications from Manchester University in the United Kingdom.  EECMY-YDCS is Joint Program within the structure of the EECMY that is given a mandate to bring the Gospel of the kingdom and information and education on current issues, to Ethiopians in the country and beyond through Mass Media Communication that includes: Radio program, Print Media and Audio Visual Communications (Cassette and Video) ministries. It is one of the biggest Christian Multi Media Centre in Ethiopia as well as in Africa. EECMY-YDCS is governed by a separate Board with a mandate to govern and see its overall operation.

The Board is appointed by the Council and is accountable to the Council. The radio program produces programs that carries contextualised messages, the content of which contains spiritual, social and developmental information and education, for broadcasting in six Ethiopian languages including Amharic (Official language of the Country), Afaan Orromo (Language of one of the Majority ethnic groups), Sidama, Hadiya, Kambata and Afar languages. LWF Africa

The LWF communion in Africa includes 30 member churches in 22 countries, with a combined membership of 14.98 million at the end of 2005. Six churches have a membership over 500,000 and ten churches have fewer than 25,000 members.

The Africa area desk (based in Geneva) accompanies LWF member churches in their holistic ministries through programs and projects that respond to particular concerns of church life in the region and specific priorities identified by the member churches.
