Mark Hanson calls for cooperation as LWF Council begins meeting in Geneva

 A meeting of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) Council begins in Geneva tommorrow. It is expected to bring together 48 Council members and 21 Advisors from different continents of the world to brainstorm on issues of concern to the Federation and the member churches. It will last for eigtht days.

The Council meeting is preceeed by a one-day meeting of the LWF Executive Committee and Board of Trustees. The meetings will deliberate on crucial issues affecting the future of the Federation.

LWF Consultation on Poverty in Africa opens in Nairobi, Kenya

A three-day Consultation  of the Lutheran World Federation(LWF) on Poverty in Africa, has opened in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. The consultation is the outcome of recommentations of the LWF 10th Assembly held in 2003 and subsequent commitments and recommendations from regional consultations in Africa.

VCTs in the Church

Church denominations in Mozambique have begun to feel the impact of the recent campaign on HIV  AIDS mounted in 2007 by the Renasce Esperanca  as one of the projects ” AIDS in Bible context” of the Evangelical Lutheran Church AIDS program.

The project which involved visiting and campaign in different Churches, meetings and workshops with church leaders from conservative and independent denominations to encourage chuches to break the silence and speak about HIV AIDS has now recorded huge success as they are now able to talk on the pandemic during their sermons. One of the denominations called PEDRA VISTA CHURCH ( Rock view Church) has gone an extra mile to ask VCT (Voluntary Counseling and Testing) to test their Christians status on HIV in the Church.

Council Appoints Director for EECMY-YDCS

Rev TayeThe Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY) Council at its fifth meeting  held at Mekane Yesus Seminary Hall in Addis Ababa, has appointed Rev. Taye Abdissa as a Director of the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus -Yemisrach Dimts Communication Services (EECMY-YDCS) for a period of four years.

LWF Africa

The LWF communion in Africa includes 30 member churches in 22 countries, with a combined membership of 14.98 million at the end of 2005. Six churches have a membership over 500,000 and ten churches have fewer than 25,000 members.

The Africa area desk (based in Geneva) accompanies LWF member churches in their holistic ministries through programs and projects that respond to particular concerns of church life in the region and specific priorities identified by the member churches.
