New Bishop elected in ELCSA

Pastor Horst Mulle has been elected as the new Bishop of ELCSA (N-T).The election took place at the Nordrand Congregation during its  Synod Congress held from 15-18 October, 2009.  The Synod was attended by 76 delegates, invited guests and other church representatives. with the theme - 'God saw all that he had made, and it was very good" Gen 1:31

SALDRAN Leaders respond to climate change

Directors from the Southern Africa Lutheran Development and Relief Network (SALDRAN) have concluded their biennial meeting at the Lutheran Conference Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa. SALDRAN is a regional expression of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) departments, consisting of World Service Field Programs and Associate Programs.The Directors met to discuss the issues of climate change and carbon emissions as matters of regional concern as well as to explore opportunities of strengthening their co-operation.

LWF Women hold Pre-Assembly in Geneva

         More than Fifty women from the different continents of the world have found space in Bossey, near Geneva, to discuss their concerns and strategise towards the forthcoming LWF Assembly holding in Stuttgart in July, 2010. 

         At this Women's Pre-Assembly, are Regional Coordinators, Delegates and Women Bishops and lay persons.  The meeting is trying to find meaning to the theme of the Assembly which is "Give Us this Day, Our Daily Bread" as it relates to women and humanity as a whole.

         It is also featuring Lectures on Women and their involvement in Food Security, Poverty, Gender Justice and Human Trafficking.
Other issues such as the  LWF Renewal Process, the Forthcoming election of a new LWF President and the Rules and Procedures at the Assembly are also on the Agenda.

Chilean Theologian Elected as New LWF General Secretary

On Monday, 26 October 2009, Chilean pastor Rev. Martin Junge was elected as the eighth General Secretary of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) for a seven-year term. The election took place in closed session.

With this election, Junge becomes the first representative from the Latin America and Caribbean region to hold the highest position at the LWF Secretariat.

The LWF Council is meeting from 22 to 27 October at Chavannes-de-Bogis near Geneva, Switzerland.

LWF Africa

The LWF communion in Africa includes 30 member churches in 22 countries, with a combined membership of 14.98 million at the end of 2005. Six churches have a membership over 500,000 and ten churches have fewer than 25,000 members.

The Africa area desk (based in Geneva) accompanies LWF member churches in their holistic ministries through programs and projects that respond to particular concerns of church life in the region and specific priorities identified by the member churches.
